In August 2014 a small group of intercultural bilingual teachers from the Rakamo Pweya (RP) indigenous people represented by an elementary school teacher and a small group of fellow educators nearing retirement reached out to OIDI PERU. They expressed their concern regarding the danger facing their native language, cultural expressions, and cultural heritage. Professor Eva Pacaya Ordoñez (RP) and Dr. Wilfredo Chau (OIDI) embarked on a long journey; the project seeks to raise awareness and strengthen the aboriginal language and cultural expressions through participatory community-based education. They identified Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) as an ideal collective and intergenerational connector, paving the way for the revival of the Rakamo Pewya Traditional Sports and Games (TSG-RP). From 2014 to 2026, TSG-RP activities have been carried out in the two native communities’ “Flor de Coco” and “Buenavista“ with ≈500 Indigenous people as population; these communities are in the Peruvian region of Loreto, situated on the riverbank Arabela, remote area close to Ecuador. Through the time, this work has been supported by Indigenous authorities (RP), intercultural bilingual education teachers, and all those who self-identify as descendants within that territory.
The organizations IRICAS.ORG and OIDI Peru are joining forces with Marcos Terena and Wilton Littlechild to organize the third edition of the World Indigenous Games, creating a space to strengthen our identity, one that takes pride in tribal heritage and indigenous roots.
